  Mail room

   Slideshow from mail room

Schibsted Trykk's mail room is primarily designed to cover the requirements of the Aftenposten and VG newspapers. In total around one million newspapers are printed daily, which are then handled in the mail room prior to distribution. Some newspaper editions contain advertising papers that are inserted in the main product, whilst others are addressed online before they are packed and supplied to the newspaper delivery vehicles.

The packing equipment, which is supplied by Ferag, is extremely complex and involves advanced computer operation. There are systems for winding and unwinding and a buffer that ensures that the printing press and mail room can operate independently of one another.

There are five main conveyors from the press halls to the mail room, one from each folder. The newspapers first pass a switching area, where the newspapers can be directed onto one or more slave conveyors, depending on what is to happen to the product subsequently. The switching area provides total flexibility between the press and the mail room.

There are a total of seven conveyors entering the packing plant. Of these, six go via insert machines.

The insert machines give you the option of up to three different inserts in one newspaper. The supplements can either be unwound from a roll or can be fed manually. The trimmer is used to produce printed matter that is not in broadsheet or tabloid format.

The newspapers pass an inkjet addressing machine, which can address newspaper products directly, before they reach the stackers. We have 38 stackers spread across seven modules. Each module consists of two packing lines. The stackers count and bundle the products in parcels of the desired size, which are then given an address label and a bar code. The parcels are wrapped in plastic, and are secured with a strap before they are sent out on a conveyor belt to the loading area. A scanner reads the bar code on the address label and passes information to the system about which hatch the parcel is to be dispatched to. The newspaper delivery vehicles then transport the newspapers either to paper boys, single copy retailers or to air or mail terminals.
